Vous devez savoir que tous les voyageurs qui veulent entrer aux États-Unis doivent depuis 2008 demander l’ ESTA – en français le Système électronique d’autorisation de voyage – un document numérique émis par le Département de l’Immigration des États-Unis.
L’ESTA est un document qui s’obtient bien plus rapidement qu’un visa. En effet, alors que pour le visa on doit se rendre à l’ambassade américaine sur rendez-vous, l’ESTA peut être obtenu en ligne en quelques minutes depuis un ordinateur.
Attention, l’obtention de l’Esta est toutefois conditionnée par deux points importants :
- Vous devez présenter un passeport en règles et être ressortissant d’un pays signataire du VWP
- Vous devez arriver à bord d’un avion ou bateau d’une compagnie signataire du VWP
Par ailleurs si vous planifiez un séjour de plus de 90 jours aux USA, vous devrez faire une demande de visa à l’ambassade.
Comment faire concrètement sa demande d’ESTA ?
Le formulaire ESTA disponible sur internet vous permet de faire votre demande de Visa pour les USA.
La procédure exige vous fournissez certains renseignements personnels et que vous répondiez à des questions concernant votre santé et le but de votre voyage. Vous devrez en particulier renseigner vos noms, prénom, profession et adresse de séjour aux USA. Si vous voyagez avec des enfants, même en bas age, vous devrez faire une demande pour chacun d’entre eux.
Si le service d’immigration des États-Unis devrait vous contacter dans la journée pour vous informer de l’approbation de votre demande, il reste préférable de faire votre demande au moins 3 jours avant votre départ.
Notez que l’obtention d’un ESTA ne garantit pas votre entrée aux USA les Services des douanes et de la protection des frontières des États-Unis pouvant dans certains cas vous refuser le passage de la frontière.
